Outreach Schools We Serve

• Re-E-Lwele Primary School, a government school situated 3kms from Pecanwood College on the Oberon Road
• Frikkie Smidt Primary School, a government school situated in Skeerpoort, a farming community
• Frikkie Smidt Creche, a privately run daycare centre for less fortunate children from the farming community of Skeerpoort
• Schaumberg School, a government primary and high school catering for over 400 learners from the Broederstroom, Skeerpoort and Hekpoort communities
• Aalwyn Farm School, a government farm school situated on the Hartbeeshoek Road
• Laerskool Skeerpoort, an Afrikaans government primary school situated in Skeerpoort
• Sangiro Day Care Centre, a local crèche based at Sangiro Chicken Farm.

Main Activities

We provide the following services to our community:

• Food schemes – we supply food to ensure a nutritious meal for over 400 children on a daily basis.
• Reading schemes – providing reading assistance to Grade 4s to 7s at our primary schools on a weekly basis. We are also establishing and managing school libraries.
• Computer literacy – supplying professional computer training of teachers and learners at primary schools.
• Administration assistance – we supply and maintain computers, printers and photocopier machines for schools.
• Arts and Cultural development – we provide art and culture classes, materials and projects. This includes dancing, painting, clay-work, choir coaching, knitting and drama.
• Outings – we finance and coordinate educational and sports outings and events for these schools eg. museums, zoos, theatre and sports fixtures.
• Adult Literacy Training – In July 2008 we started weekly literacy classes for farm labourers, domestic workers and unemployed people in our community. These classes take place at Pecanwood College every Wednesday evening and lessons are taught by volunteer educators from the College.
• ABET – providing skills development training for teachers and Headmasters at schools as well as Life Skills and Catering staff training for less-fortunate adults in our community.
• Bursaries – In 2009 we fund 14 bursary learners at Pecanwood College ranging from Grade 00 to Matric.

• Development and maintenance of computer centers and libraries at these schools
• Development and maintenance of adequate sports fields
• Training of staff at schools responsible for Feeding Schemes to facilitate their independence and sustainability in the long term.
• Maintenance of school buildings and grounds including installation of security systems, service of septic tanks, lawn cutting, etc.
• We are part of Pecanwood College’s Eco-Schools and are introducing Eco projects at our outreach schools eg. establishment of organic vegetable gardens and recycling centers
• We collect jumble and products for distribution to the needy – Each year we source donations from company’s and individuals in the form of blankets, food and stationery that is distributed to the needy in our community via social services and schools. Exmaple: in May 2008 we received 15 tonnes of food and blankets from Nissan SA.
• From July 2008 to August 2008, we hosted a Soup Kitchen at the Schaumberg informal settlement to provide a hot meal for pensioners, unemployed people and street children living in poverty within this township.

Fundraising

PET relies completely on funds raised from companies and individuals as no funding is received from Pecanwood College school fees. Our fund-raising activities include:

• Three annual community events including – a Golf Day; a Ladies Breakfast and one other that changes each year. These events cover our overheads and regular outreach programmes.
• Overseas donations – generated through Centurus Colleges Trust.
• Corporate donations – CSI based donations towards specific projects.
• Private donations – We have a number of private individuals that pledge a monthly stop-order towards our feeding scheme for schools.
• Jumble Sales – Throughout the year we collect second-hand clothing and jumble and sell this to the community at very favourable prices. This generates a small amount of money for the Trust whilst providing cheap clothing to the community.
• Other events – We tag onto, and organize, various other fund-raising promotions and events to generate income for our outreach activities.
