Mandela day | 18 July 2014
On my last day I want to know that those who remain behind will say: “The man who lies here has done his duty for his country and his people.” Nelson Mandela – Extract from his speech when being welcomed home to Qunu on his retirement in 1999.

Full tummies this cold Winter
The Izzi Trust and Makro provided 135,000 meals to 4500 families at our partner schools Philena Primary and Orefile Primary in Olievenhoutbos, Madibatlou Middle School in Olifantsfontein and Boschkop Primary in Pretoria East this July school holiday.
Over 60 volunteers from Blue Bulls, EOH, Council for Geoscience, Makro Head Office, Southdowns College, Tyger Valley College and Makro Silver Lakes helped us hand out the parcels.
“Those who are ready to join hands can overcome the greatest challenges” Nelson Mandela
In April the preschool students collected nonperishable food parcels and packed them for the Refentse Settlement playschool. Students were invited to join Pecanwood College preschool for the morning enjoying a nutritious snack donated by Pick n Pay and on departure given the much needed food parcels.

Southdowns Helps Out Together
14 learners from Southdowns College High School visited Philena Primary School to share some art skills and resources with a few learners at Philena Primary School in Olievenhoutbos. The students were soo excited for the Southdowns College visit they had 90 grade 7 learners waiting for them! Despite the rain and muddy outdoor conditions in this overcrowded township school, the students and Mrs Vermaak quickly decided to make it a group activity. The students from both Southdowns and Philena had a productive and enjoyable afternoon, with each child walking away touched in some way by the newly established friendships.
