Feeding Schemes

Why Feeding Schemes?
Many of the children at the schools we serve arrive in the morning on an empty stomach. Their parents are unemployed, or severely impoverished - or the children do not have parents at all. There is not much point in enabling teachers to improve and update their skills, or even build classrooms, if the children are too exhausted and hungry to concentrate on what they are being taught.
The Izzi Trust Feeding Schemes
To that effect the Izzi Trust has partnered with Makro SA Pty to provide children at five of the schools and crèches we assist with a hot breakfast on arrival. They are also served a midday meal. In addition to this we provide holiday food packs to over 1,000 families during the school vacations, thus ensuring that children are well-fed even when they are not at school.

Training and Self-Sufficiency in our Feeding Schemes
At the schools in our feeding scheme we train the cooks and administrative staff in hygiene, building a nutritious menu, planning and budgeting. We monitor health and safety standards on a regular basis, with input from specialists in these fields as well as the Department of Education.
Vegetable Gardens
We have also installed sustainable vegetable gardens to encourage the schools to add fresh produce to their menus and to teach the children to learn to provide for themselves.
